Live sport - 28th December - 3rd January

Unfortunately, there won't be a live sport posting this week. This is mostly down to my two sources, livesportontv.com and ESPN's official site differing so greatly. It would take quite some time to compile, and I don't have a great deal of time due to Christmas commitments.

Hopefully I'll return next week with the usual live sport post, but it all depends on the two sites.

ESPN confirm Guinness Premiership deal

The Guardian site has confirmed that ESPN have bought the rights to show 43 live Guinness Premiership games starting from next September. As well as the 43 live games, ESPN will also show the Guinness Premiership final and one semi-final.

Sky Sports currently hold the rights to show 26 live games per season, and from next season onwards will share the Guinness Premiership rights with ESPN. So for any rugby fans, having both channels may well end up being a must. ESPN's deal will last for 3 years.

Guiness Premiership heading to ESPN?

According to Charles Sale on the Daily Mail site, ESPN have spent £30m on the Guinness Premiership rugby rights, for a total of three years. As of yet there has been no official announcement from ESPN, but if Charles Sale is correct, this would mean ESPN has spent around £100m on new sports rights in just one week.

More as it happens.

Official FA press release on ESPN deal

The FA have posted a press release on their website. This confirms the deal revealed by The Guardian article earlier today.

ESPN will be broadcasting 25 live FA Cup games from 2010 to the end of the 2013-14 season, including an exclusive Semi-Final and sharing the final with ITV. As well as the FA Cup, the deal also includes the forthcoming Women's Super League and England Under-21's home fixtures. The Women's Super League begins in 2011, so there's quite a wait for that.

The press release confirms all matches will be available in High Definition (from both ITV and ESPN).

ESPN secure FA Cup rights

An article on The Guardian website reports that ESPN have secured the FA Cup rights from next season onwards. The deal will see ESPN show two live games per round. However, ITV will continue to show one live game per round, and will get first pick ahead of ESPN. Both broadcasters will share the FA Cup final.

Despite The FA trying to rekindle their relationship with the BBC, they opted for ESPN's bid which is said to be 60% larger than the BBC's.

This is a good move by ESPN, who need something next season to try and replace the loss of half their Premier League games. However, it's unlikely that some subscribers will stay with ESPN just for the FA Cup.

ESPN America gets an update

It would appear that ESPN have listened to viewers and improved ESPN America. It is now broadcasting in 16:9, Bottom Line has been removed and a new DOG has been added. For some time now, UK fans of American sport have been calling for ESPN America to improve, and they've finally listened and sorted it out.

Good job ESPN.

ESPN talks with Blue Square Premier end

According to The Guardian, ESPN have pulled out of talks with the Blue Square Premier. The reason given seems to be that they don't think it makes good business sense, which is fair enough.

The same article also says ESPN are still negotiating with the FA over the remaining FA Cup rights.

No name for the site has been decided, and there are currently no plans to launch a VOD service along with it.

ESPN to miss out on NFL?

It has been announced over the past couple of weeks which channels had grabbed the rights to showing NFL, with Five and Sky grabbing most of them. However, Monday night games were still available, and it was expected that ESPN would snap this up.

Unfortunately today it was revealed that there is unlikely to be any information regarding Monday night games for at least the first month of the season (which starts in 3 days). Couple this with Sky not having red button games this season, understandably many NFL fans are unhappy.

Hopefully ESPN can pick up the Monday night games, but it's likely to be some time before anything is done about it.

HD update

Yesterday I mentioned that ESPN had released a statement regarding HD, saying that there would be more HD content on the channel in the next few days. Well, today seems to be the day, with most of todays programmes being in HD. This includes the football games that have been reshown today, and the X Games were also shown in HD.

Sunday 30 August 2009

Update on HD broadcasts

On the official site, on the 'Sports on ESPN' page, they have posted the following message to HD customers:

"Since its launch, ESPN has been working diligently to upgrade its technical infrastructure to provide as much of its programming as possible in native HD on the ESPN HD channel. Following some technical issues, we have been unable to provide non-live or non-football programming in HD. We anticipate having these problems resolved in the next few days . We thank you for your interest in ESPN and hope you enjoy the channel."
Hopefully it won't be long now before we see more HD on the channel.

You can now send ESPN feedback

I was having a quick browse on the ESPN site, and spotted an option called 'Feedback' under the 'More' tab. You can apparently use this to ask questions regarding the service and say what you'd like to see on the channel.

Tuesday 25 August 2009

UFC questions answered

Gareth Davies of The Telegraph, has fired some questions ESPN's way regarding their coverage of the UFC, and his blog post features the answers to these questions. World Cup Qualifier on ESPN

On September 5th, Denmark v Portugal will be broadcast live on ESPN (and ESPN HD), one of a number of World Cup Qualifier's being played on the same day, most of which are being shown on Sky Sports.

ESPN misses out on La Liga

Unfortunately, it would appear that Sky have snapped up the rights to La Liga for yet another season, with 3 live games appearing on the Sky EPG for the coming weekend, all in HD on Sky Sports 2. It is unlikely that a deal similar to the SPL one has been struck between Sky and ESPN.

Guus Hiddink joins ESPN

The Guardian, in an article about Kevin Keegan joining ESPN, also mentions that Guss Hiddink, current manager of the Russian national team and Chelsea manager last season, has joined ESPN for an unconfirmed number of Premier League games.

Premier Rugby in talks with ESPN

According to The Guardian, Premier Rugby are in talks with ESPN over a deal regarding rights for the 2010-11 season. Sky currently hold a package of 26 games, with 43 up for grabs next season.

Once more is known, it'll be here.

Kevin Keegan joins ESPN

In the build up to the West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur game today, Ray Stubbs introduced Kevin Keegan, saying that he would be a regular. Presumably he'll be present for the majority of ESPN's live Premier League games, in the studio. Today, he is alongside Shaka Hislop.

Monday 17 August 2009

Everton v Arsenal viewing figures

According to The Guardian, Saturday's live game between Everton and Arsenal saw an average of 428,000 people watching. This was ESPN's first live Barclay's Premier League game of the season.

It is not known whether this figure includes viewers of the ESPN HD channel, but I imagine it doesn't.

In comparison, Sky Sports 1 saw an average of 966,625 people watching Chelsea v Hull, but again most likely doesn't include HD viewers.

NFL confusion

Fans of the NFL will know that there has yet to be an announcement regarding which channel(s) the NFL will be appearing on for the forthcoming season. Sky, ESPN and the BBC are all rumoured to be in contention.

A couple of members of the NFLUK forum have contacted Sky, and received different responses. One response was that Sky would definitely have NFL next season, the first game being shown on Sky Sports 2, whilst another got a response of it being on ESPN.

An announcement is expected fairly soon, and once it has been made, you'll know about it here.

First viewing figures

According to The Guardian's TV ratings article, ESPN's most watched show yesterday was the boxing, which saw 17,000 viewers. Not bad for a channel which has just launched and is showing very little at the moment.

Serie A football confirmed for ESPN

More football rights have been confirmed for ESPN, this time the Italian Serie A. The following comes from ESPN:

"ESPN is delighted to announce that it has secured an exclusive deal, with MP & Silva,*to broadcast up to three live Serie A matches per week for the 2009/10 season. Featuring some of the world's greatest players, from recent Inter Milan signing Samuel Eto’o to Juventus veteran Alessandro Del Piero, Serie A is one of the most popular leagues in the world watched by millions around the globe.

ESPN will feature up to three of the top picks from each weekend’s fixtures. The season kicks off on Saturday 22nd August with Siena against seven-time European champions AC Milan, followed on Sunday by Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan as they face Bari. The following weekend’s action will see the prestigious Milan derby as AC take on Inter for early season bragging rights on Saturday 29th August. The next day, on Sunday 30th August, ESPN will broadcast Juventus v Roma.

Jeroen Oerlemans, Vice President & Channel Manager TV, ESPN Europe, Middle East & Africa said: “We’re very pleased to be able to broadcast the Italian Serie A. As one of the best leagues in the world, the live coverage will sit nicely with our Barclays Premier League, Clydesdale Bank Premier League and Bundesliga matches, making the channel the number one stop for football fans around the UK in SD and HD.”

Carlo Pozzali, CEO Media Partners and Silva: “We are delighted to increase our relationship with ESPN, a broadcast partner which ensures best coverage for Italian Serie A in United Kingdom.”"

ESPN confirmed for BT Vision

Digital Spy report today that ESPN has been confirmed for BT Vision, available on channel number 34. It will be available to all customers who previously received Setanta Sports 1, free of charge, whilst previous Setanta subscribers on packs other than Bronze, Silver or Gold will receive it for free until August 31st.

All new customers who wish to subscribe to ESPN will pay £7.34 for the first three months, which will rise to £14.68 thereafter. On top of this, a one time charge for a viewing card of £9.78 is necessary.

Whilst it's good to see ESPN being carried on all the major digital distributors, BT certainly isn't the cheapest option for subscription to the new channel, and is currently the most expensive overall.

Tuesday 4 August 2009

ESPN available on Top Up TV

Digital Spy report that ESPN have struck a deal with Top Up TV for their new ESPN channel to be carried on the Top Up TV service. It will be available from today for £9.99 a month, on channel number 34.

ESPN America will continue to broadcast

For a while now, it has been unclear as to what will happen to ESPN America, and it had been presumed that it would become the new ESPN channel with all American sport moving to the new channel. It has now been confirmed that ESPN America will remain, and will only be switching channel numbers. The following has been added to the ESPN America website:

"While ESPN America will continue to broadcast to customers on the Sky platform, ESPN America will be changing channel numbers. From 3rd August, ESPN America will move from Channel 417 to Channel 430.

ESPN America will also be moving out of the ‘News and Events’ pack and Sky customers will be able to subscribe to ESPN America as follows:

Virgin Media subscribers will be able to get ESPN America as follows:

While ESPN will continue to broadcast to customers on the Virgin Media platform, ESPN America will be changing channel numbers. From 3rd August, ESPN America will move from Channel 533 to Channel 531."

I know many American sports fans will be pleased to hear this.

Jon Champion and Kelly Cates confirmed

According to The Guardian, Jon Champion and Kelly Cates have joined ESPN. Jon Champion previously commentated on some of ITV's football coverage, and will continue this role for ESPN. Kelly Cates previously presented Setanta Sports News before Setanta collapsed, and which programmes she will present has yet to be confirmed.

  • UFC (including UFC 101)
  • French Rugby Championship
  • Australian Football League

And apparently there is more to come as well.

Wednesday 29 July 2009

UFC news and commentators confirmed

According to The Sun, ESPN have got hold of the rights to show UFC fights, starting from next month with UFC 101. They claim this is an exclusive, so there is no confirmation from ESPN themselves yet.

The Sun have also confirmed the two commentators for ESPN's SPL coverage, which will be Derek Rae and Craig Burley, with Ray Stubbs presenting the program.

ESPN confirmed for Virgin Media, finally!

It has today been confirmed that ESPN will be available to Virgin Media TV customers from August 3rd, and also in HD, along with ESPN Classic. The new channel (and HD channel), will be available to XL TV customers at no additional cost, whilst those on M & L TV can subscribe for £8 a month if taken with Sky Sports, or £10 a month on its own.

This confirmation of carriage on Virgin Media comes shortly after ESPN confirmed a number of football rights including MLS, Eredivisie and Portuguese Liga football.

Tuesday 28 July 2009

More football in the bag

ESPN America site incorrect

According to the Virgin Media twitter, when the ESPN America update was put to them regarding ESPN being free to XL TV customers, they responded with; "Their site is incorrect - however we are in the middle of discussions with ESPN on a number of things so watch this space." Whether or not this means it won't be free is not clear, so we're still waiting for official news regarding how the channel will be carried on Virgin.

At least Sky customers can rest safe in the knowledge that they'll be getting ESPN HD, and if they are already subscribed to Sky Sports, they can add ESPN for £9 a month.

Official site updated

Almost two weeks after the last update, the official ESPN site has been updated once more, this time with more content and a smarter look.

Major information from this update is:

  • ESPN HD practically confirmed as a Sky exclusive, with the site saying, "All Premier League matches broadcast on ESPN will also be available in HD to Sky+ HD customers."
  • More broadcast rights should be announced soon, with an image on the subscription page saying, "We look forward to announcing more sports over the coming days."
There is still no word on the site regarding Virgin Media, and there are a number of links to Sky for those wishing to subscribe. As soon as further details are available, they'll be here.

ESPN pricing confirmed for Virgin Media?

The ESPN America website has changed, on the page which details how to get the channel, saying:

"ESPN America is available on Virgin Media channel 533 but differs depending on what Virgin TV package you subscribe to.

M & L pack subscribers: ESPN America costs an additional £10
XL Pack subscribers: ESPN America is free as part of your package"

This suggests that the new channel will be available for free to all XL TV subscribers, and for all other customers it will be available for an extra £10 a month as an additional service. Good news if true, but there is yet to be an official announcement regarding this.

Meanwhile, a Digital Spy member has contacted Neil Berkett, the CEO of Virgin Media, to ask if ESPN will be available on Virgin Media, and received the reply "you will be able to get ESPN but not in HD at the moment." So it is very unlikely that Virgin Media customers will be able to experience the new ESPN channel in HD until a later date.

Thursday 23 July 2009

SPL list out tomorrow

The list of SPL games to be broadcast on ESPN and Sky will be available tomorrow. Expect them here when they're available.

Wednesday 22 July 2009

ESPN now testing on Sky

ESPN have begun test transmissions on the Sky platform, in both SD and HD. As reported by Digital Spy, "The HD channel placeholder can be located at 11856 V at a symbol rate of 29500 with a FEC of 3/4."

The same article claims that Virgin Media are still discussing a deal with ESPN to carry the channel.

Friday 17 July 2009

First presenter revealed

According to The Guardian, ESPN have hired former BBC presenter Ray Stubbs to present Premier League coverage. Any of you who watch some of the BBC Sport programmes, will remember Ray Stubbs from darts coverage, the Final Score programme, and occasionally presenting Match of the Day in place of Gary Lineker.

Thursday 16 July 2009

UFC deal close

According to iFight365.com, ESPN are leading the way to getting hold of the UFC rights, and are close to announcing a deal. They face competition from Five, Bravo and Sky Sports.

More as it comes.

SPL deal struck (Updated)

Just heard on Sky Sports News that the SPL clubs have voted for the £65m joint deal with ESPN and Sky, to broadcast 60 games a season, up until 2011, with the option to broadcast for another two seasons.

As soon as further details are available, it'll be here.

Update: It has been confirmed that the games will be split equally between ESPN and Sky, and the deal will last until at least the 2011/12 season. No fixture list is yet available, but as soon as it is published, we'll let you know.

Tuesday 14 July 2009

ESPN favourites to win UFC rights

According to an article on The Sun website, Sky have snubbed a deal for the UFC rights, which leaves ESPN as favourites to show the UFC in August. An official announcement is set to be made next week.

ESPN to commission IMG Sports Media

According to an article on The Guardian's website, ESPN are to commission American company IMG Sports Media to produce its studio shows for its Premier League coverage and for any future rights they may get.
"ESPN, due to launch a new UK channel in time for the beginning of the football season to house the 46 live Premier League matches that became available when Setanta went under, is poised to sign a vital production deal. The US broadcaster will commission IMG Sports Media, the production arm of the global sports marketing company, to make the studio shows and ancillary programming for its Premier League coverage and any other rights it wins. Sky cameras will provide its on-pitch coverage but IMG will take responsibility for other content, some of which is also likely to be shared with its ESPN Soccernet website. The deal is the latest manifestation of ESPN's efforts to keep costs down by outsourcing retail, customer service and production to third parties. It is also expected to extend to programming around other rights that ESPN is seeking. The Scottish Premier League is considering a joint bid from Sky and ESPN to step into the void left by the collapse of Setanta and the broadcaster is believed to be in negotiations with the Football Association over FA Cup rights."
IMG currently work with Sky Sports for their Premier League coverage. This is also the first we've heard about ESPN trying to get FA Cup rights, so here's hoping they can add those rights to the Premier League ones. More as we get it.

Saturday 11 July 2009

Official site updates

Finally there has been a change to the official ESPN website, going from a simple site which just allows you to register your interest, to a slightly better one with information on Sky channel numbers, a link to a new page for registering interest with Sky, who will then contact you about how to subscribe to the channel. They also show the first fixture they'll be showing of the new season (Everton v Arsenal), as announced yesterday.

Friday 10 July 2009
